| Did you hear about the Houston crane collapse? What a sad story. There have actually been several cranes that have collapsed recently in the country, but this Houston crane accident that killed 4 people is the latest. Here's the scoop I just found: All of the people injured were contract workers, a spokesman for LyondellBasell, the chemical company which ran the plant, told reporters. "We were actually preparing to do some major maintenance activities there. That's why the crane was placed where it was." But the crane, operated by Deep South Crane & Rigging, was not scheduled to be active. However witnesses said its engine was running when the collapse occurred. Crane safety has come under extra scrutiny in recent months because of an alarming number of crane-related deaths in places such as New York, Miami and Las Vegas. Rules governing construction cranes vary among cities and states, some of which have no regulations at all, choosing instead to rely on federal guidelines dating back nearly 40 years that some experts say have not kept up with technological advances. So from what I have gathered no one really knows the cause of the crane accident in Houston. As soon as I hear a cause, I will update this. Here's a Houston crane collapse picture ![]()
