![]() Yep, there will be a solar eclipse on August 1, 2008! Where can you see the solar eclipse? Will it be a full or partial eclipse? What time will it happen? Good questions! If you live in the US, you won't catch any of this 2008 solar eclipse unless you live in the extreme northeast. That sucks! A total solar eclipse will begin in northern Canada early Friday morning, and sweep through Greenland, the Arctic, Russia, Mongolia, and China. A partial solar eclipse will be seen in the northeastern parts of North America, and much of Europe and Asia. The best place to view the full solar eclipse, for the longest length of time, is in Russia in the cities of Novosibirsk, Nadym, Nizhnevartovsk, Barnaul, and Biysk. That sucks! The Sun will be completely hidden by the Moon for 2 minutes, 27 seconds beginning at 10:21:08 GMT, in northern Russia. When will it happen? The beginning of the general eclipse will occur in far-northern Canada early in the morning at about 8:04 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), or 4:04 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT). The total solar eclipse will begin at about 9:21 a.m. GMT, or 5:21 a.m. EDT. That still sucks! So the short end of the story is that I won't see any of this Aug 1 eclipse. It turns out that any spot on Earth will only see a full eclipse about once every 375 years. That really sucks! I guess I will be waiting a while, unless I can talk someone into giving me free tickets right now to Siberia.
